First Row To Alcatraz - 10 min 2007

Shot on 16mm by releasing the shutter one frame per second, then stretched out in editing. The camera, housed in a wooden box on steel pontoons, was towed behind a rowboat as I rowed from the shore of San Francisco to Alcatraz and back during a hailstorm.

The camera-houseboat was too heavy and acted as a sea anchor, pulling me out toward the Golden Gate Bridge as I tried to row back to shore. When the coast guard helicopter began hovering above me, I finally pulled the camera-houseboat into the rowboat and was able to row much more easily back to shore.
